It is a sample flange effect! I would hit a low note, sample it for one sec with a momentary switch with the flanger. Absolutely brutal volume combo.Īlso went the Ultra to Ax II route, BUT there is still one effect from the 2120 that I can't seem to recreate on the AXE II. Obviously, the power amp modeling on the AFX2 is a MILLION times better than it was on the Standard, though, so perhaps that's not true anymore.Ĭlick to expand.I had the same 2/100 rectifier amp too, matched with a Mesa over sized 4 x 12 cab. I haven't tried that with my AFX2, but with my old AFX Standard, I never felt that I could get the right sound with a SS power amp.

If you can pick up a solid state power amp cheaply, that would be a good way to compare and see whether you need the Mesa. You can dial out the power amp simulation on the AFX2's amp sims while continuing to use the Mesa, and that might be a good way to start with it. That shouldn't be surprising, given the rapid development of technology and the high amount of processing power the AFX2 uses.ĭespite all the people saying "you don't need that Mesa power amp anymore," I would say hold off on taking that out of your rig. The 2101/2112/2120 are great pieces of gear, but I think the AFX2 blows them away in every aspect. However, I just used it DI for studio stuff, which is also what I do with the AFX2. This is THE Savage 120 w/6550s tone spot-on.I was a 2101 user for years, as well. Saturated Tube, Gain 50%, front panel eq (B/M/T) flat at noon and just some preamp 10band graphic eq settings (goes -15 / +15): *edit* Tinkering some more with it with fresh ears this morning I can get some real in-the-ballpark Engl Savage 120 sounds outta this box.

The FX section leaves nothing to be desired and blows any other Multi-FX from that era (Quadraverb, Intellifex.) outta the water hands down.Lexicon and Eventide might be competitors though. The FX loop is (unfortunately) located in front of the Tube/Analog preamp (right after Comp and Wah), but if you slave in a Preamp with enough moxy (MP-1/-2 Triaxis Engl Rockmaster. The amount of gain/distortion/saturation I can get with this baby is more than enough for my tastes.might be lacking for them folks who put a Boss Metal Zone in front of a Triple Rectifier. Signal Path was Guitar (Ibby Swamp Ash RGR with CrunchLab and Air Norton) > 2120 > AxeFX II (IR only) > MacBook Pro. I used Tube Voicing #4 („Saturated Tube“) with gain 50%, a bit of Quad Chorus and 250ms Delay on the 2120 and an IR (Boogie 4x12 w/ 70W Celestion V30, mic'd with SM57 and KSM313) from the AxeFX II. Took me some time to get re-accustomed to the UI and the controls of the 2120.hell, it's been 23 years since I programmed one of these for the last time. I just hammered down some sloppy leads over a random backing track with a preset i set up on the fly, see/hear attached.
